Community Health & Hygiene
To create a healthy living condition in rural areas
NEW at Health Center (Feb 09) - Mosquito bednet for all
First Sanitation Drive

The first initiative of ADIRE
was on health and hygiene. Around 80% of the population in JABAKA
villages did not have toilets and were using a huge patch of land for
that purpose. Around 30 toilets and 12 tubewells were distributed
to 30 families to start with. Materials were supplied by ADIRE and the
families put in labor to build their own toilets. The land that was
being used as public toilet was converted to a park with swings, slides
and see saws where children can play and enjoy. This place also became
a hub of the village for celebrating all community activities.

Dr. Niranjan Tripathy, Medicine Specialist in Health Camp - Nov. 2003
|
To
educate people on health and hygiene issues first health camp was
organized in Nov 2003 with specialist doctors Dr. Niranjan Tripathy-
Medicine Specialist, Dr. Tophan Pati - Pshychiatrist from Cuttack and
Dr. Panda - medicine specialist from nearby township Salipur attended.
They explained the benefits of using toilets to the villagers. In
continuation another health camp was organized in the same park in June
2005 to reinforce the health and hygiene issues. Dr. Panda -medicine
specialist, Dr. Bani Samant - gynecologist and Dr. Gagan Bihari Pati -
pediatrician checked the overall health of the people and free
medicines were supplied. For those patients who were critical,
arrangements were made for their follow-up check-up in SCB Medical
College, Cuttack. During this health camp it was assessed that most of
the people do not get any primary treatment and as it gets delayed the
condition worsens by the time they go to the nearby hospital (around 20
k.m). After assessing the situation it was decided that a primary
health center will be set up in the village where all emergency
medication will be available. |

Homeopathy Clinic set-up by Rotary Club- Cuttack Midtown
|
To
start with a homeopathy clinic was set-up in August 2005 with the help
of Rotary Club- Cuttack Midtown. Renowned homeopathy specialist Dr.
Pradeep Rao, Dr. Gautam Rao and nutritionist Dr. Nanda gave
free consultation and medicines to people. In continuation a
regular homeopathy clinic was set-up where Dr. Gautam
Rao visits once in a fortnight and give free consultation and
medicines to the people. A local wing of Rotary (Rotary Community Corps
/ RCC- JABAKA) was formed with volunteers from these three villages.
These volunteers and ADIRE's staff currently coordinate and assist the
doctors and Rotary for effective running of the clinic as well as
generating awareness among the people on health, sanitation and
nutrition issues. We thank Rotary Club- Midtown Cuttack for providing free consulting service by the doctor.
In
order to generate health and sanitation related awareness a weekly
Study Circle is held in the village where a local health worker along
with some ADIRE staff and RCC-JABAK volunteers discuss and advise
various health & hygiene related issues with the local people.
People are also encouraged to access related information through
the internet available free for the villagers.
ADIRE
is planning to set-up a primary health center by end of 2007. Local
youth have been selected to be trained in basic nursing in order to
take care of normal preventable medications. For any emergency
situations one doctor will be available on call for advise and for
other critical diseases or health conditions people will be referred to
the concerned doctor in the medical college of the nearby city Cuttack
and a medical van will be available 24 hrs to transport critical
patients to the city hospital.
